I found my inner gremlin once again while playing this afternoon. I don’t bite anymore so this face really just means I’m ready to play!

With the big girls

On my Christmas Vacation I got to play and walk with the big girls. I didn’t swim yet, but I will very very soon. I am still a bit timid around the water because it is coming at me so fast. I did get to run around and bark at the big girls. I also got to make friends with lots of other dogs on the beach. I learned that I don’t like Jack Russell terriers, or really terriers of any kind (they are really yippy). Overall I LOVE big dogs, and really friendly medium sized dogs.

I started fetching this blue tennis ball and for some reason everyone got really excited when I did it, but it IS in my nature. I sort of just decided I wanted to do it. It’s fun because every time I bring the ball to someone they throw it for me again!

Making friends!

All of the big dogs wanted to come smell me and play with me, some even wanted to run around with me. It was so much fun. I am learning so fast these days. Every time I go see my cousins in San Diego they show me new stuff about how to have fun, and how to make friends.

Mom says 'drop' so that I give her the ball.

Someday I will fetch the ball in the water, but for now I only go get it when it is only on the sand. I also learned that I can ‘do my business’ on the sand as well.

Proudly carrying my ball

And here is a little taste of what I have to look forward to!

FUN

I usually can’t play with only one toy at a time, but I make a special exception when I get to play with the Xmas toy! It has little balls with santa hats INSIDE of it, and I get to pull them out and throw them around.

Wait

This is how I wait at the door. I usually have to wait to enter, and wait if there are people approaching me. (No one likes a jumpy crazy puppy… OK well some people do, but you don’t know who those people are until you meet them.)

You can thank my new friend Jess for this picture of me. She had a lot of fun playing with me yesterday. I will show you a picture of her soon!

Treats and Begging

NO BEGGING, no waiting for table scraps…. no people food, unless it is in my bowl. I have slowly learned these lessons. I used to jump in everyone’s lap when they were eating, but I have learned that it is no use. Now I just wait, and when nothing drops from the table for a few minutes I go and find 4 or 5 toys to play with. If I am REALLY lucky I get a bully stick to chew on while everyone else is eating.

I can’t resist the smell of cooking. Whenever there is food being prepared in the kitchen that is where you can find me. I love smelling all food being cooked…. and sometimes a few pieces drop for me to eat as well. On the whole I don’t beg…. mostly because I eat BEFORE everyone else. I usually eat about 30 minutes before so that my tummy is full when everyone else is eating.

Treats are a completely different story. I am apparently allowed to beg for treats. In grandma and grandpa’s house I know where the treats are, so when people go over to those particular spots I follow them just waiting. I know my commands so I will get a treat every time. I am still learning to roll over, but I’ve got sit, down, wait, off, shake, high five and kiss.

Yes, we are begging.

Lastly, there are some treats that make your breath smell…. I apparently don’t get these treats anymore. I DO LOVE THEM, so I guess I will have to wait until the bad breath doesn’t last that long so that I can get them again! Look how patient we all are while we wait for our treats!

Leash Training

Puppy leash training seems to be a lot easier than older dog leash training. According to this article training your puppy the right way when they are young (they usually want to learn) rather than trying to re-train an older dog is much easier. My cousins walk pretty good on a leash, but the oldest (I would consider her my grandma) pulls pretty hard if she isn’t wearing a harness.

There are a lot of myths about leashes, and about leash training…. I’m pretty sure you won’t know what kind of training your puppy responds best to until you train him or her. I learn best with treats and clicks and ‘Good Girl’ and ‘come on’… My mom calls my name while we walk and I look back at her. When I do she gives me a little treat so that I know I did the right thing. (I usually get a click first) I really enjoy when she talks to me a little bit while we are walking… it keeps me on track with the task at hand.

I started wearing a collar when I was really tiny, probably only 2 or 3 weeks old, so the only thing foreign to me was the name tag and the little jingle that it made, especially the jingle when it hits my food bowl. I now wear a harness sometimes to walk, which was annoying at first, but I’m ok with either a collar or a harness now.

When I first was put on a leash I wanted to chew on it and carry it in my mouth, but I quickly learned that this is NOT what mom wanted me to to as she would make the TSST sound when I did it. I also learned that when I dropped it out of my mouth she gave me a treat… and I like how the treats taste better than the leash so I dropped the habit. Now I walk proudly down the street only stopping when something smells TOO GOO TO RESIST!

Sitting patiently, waiting to GO AGAIN!

I hope you like how I sit while I wait. I learned that every time we stop, I should sit down next to my mom to wait for her cue to go again. Another thing I noticed recently is that when I go on walks I tend to have to ‘do my business’ while we are walking and I noticed that mom always carries bags to pick up after me. She is so nice!

Many more walks to come in the future as I get to go on 2-3 a day now!!!! life is good!

Xmas Rest

After half an hour running on the beach and chasing my cousins around I needed some rest. Everyone else was gathering to open presents near the tree, and I just wanted to close my eyes and pass out. I thought my mom would let me pass out on her, but then she wanted to sit up and not let me sleep.

Climbing all over mommy

Finally Grandpa came out and laid down with me and my cousins (Izzie and Callie, not Lily because she always sleeps in her crate). He napped with us for about an hour.

Sleepy Time

Then my mom came in and wanted to nap too, but after that relaxing time I was already up again. I was still a little groggy….
